breaking up is hard to do

No, this is not a post bashing a previous relationship – lately my dating life involves a bad date here and there, maybe someone that is worth a second date, usually ending with me thinking that I don’t mind so much the fact that I get to decide what I want to do without factoring someone else in. It’s not ideal, but hey I guess it’s better than feeling like I am missing out for now.  I’ve watched a few friends go through some recent bad break ups – and watching them and remembering your own painful experiences just sucks, particularly when you thought things were going well.  I’ve definitely had the blindsided break up, you think this is going pretty well, maybe there’s something here – the two of you are making plans, hanging out, staying at each other’s places, and then he comes over and tells you he doesn’t feel that way about you. It’s a complete bummer in life, because honestly most singles would like to meet someone who will be in it for the long haul.  To find out someone doesn’t have the feelings you are hoping/expecting hurts, hurts a lot. I’ve also experienced the fade out, the slow progression of talking less, hanging less, fewer text messages (anyone else hate what smart phones did to dating? Remember when you had to call someone to make plans?), and then nothing. I mean I’ve done it myself to guys too, and it’s really not a grown up approach to anything – but then again neither one of you is pushing too hard to try this or force a conversation. The only thing worse is prolonging a break up, because as long as you hold on, the longer it takes to move forward, and potentially meet that special person. I think the important to remember is to be kind to people, even when you are going to end the relationship- after all we all are a little fragile some times.

summer turns to high

Happy Friday Lovelies. Hopefully you are all getting ready for another fantastically hot summer weekend. Typically these are the weekends where I have no plans to be near any form of water, but this is rare occasion where I am going to a gathering around a pool (a big treat for city people) one day and the beach the next. It’s pretty much the best of both worlds, as long as I pack plenty of sunscreen. Are you a beach or a pool person? I really don’t mind either, I just don’t love going in the ocean and being salty for the rest of the day unless it’s so hot I want to melt, I tend to stay on land. I love the breeze and the ocean, and the sand between my toes.  Pools are fun too – plus you can always see the bottom which was one of the reasons I liked life guarding at pools. There’s something to be said for that crystal clear water and that smell of chlorine.

live in the past

Summer and I are getting a lot of reading in, I think it has to with just picking some really good books that I want to know what happens next. Sooner or later I am going to have to start hiding the books from myself so I can fall asleep at a normal time.

The Given Day by Dennis Lehane, was a very interesting book interweaving the lives of two young men in 1918, taking place in Boston. I found myself looking up many of the historic events in the book, just to get more of a background. It definitely showed a city on the verge of a breakdown as events throughout the book ended with the Boston Police Strike. I really enjoy historical fiction and this did not disappoint, it even brought forth Babe Ruth as a secondary character who saw many of the events brewing. A struggle of race, class, and injustices I highly recommend this to just about anyone looking for a good long read.

defintion of summer madness

It's officially the dog days of summer- August always has me itchy for vacation. Last month I set some goals for the month -I didn't do so hot on my July list only about 3/5 - I fell off on the veggies and the movie (I guess that's not too awful). I liked putting my monthly list of things to do published for all to see - maybe it holds me accountable, maybe not. Here's the list for August:

1) Train for my 10k at the end of the month
2) Read the owner's manual for my new camera
3) Figure out a few places to visit in San Francisco
4) Send a postcard
5) Swim laps
