the summertime girls got it going on

Summertime and rooftops are New York at some of its best points. Nothing beats the view from the top of a building, and nothing is better then sipping cocktails in the summer sun getting a tan. I recently spent part of a gorgeous afternoon at 230 Fifth - enjoying the view and good company, all while taking in some great scenes of summer. I can't imagine a bluer sky, and I highly recommend ordering a raspberry mojito to keep cool and fresh in the heat.

you're walking naked down the street

Ever find one of those tops that you know you are going to wear as often as possible? I happened to find this great neutral sweater at Banana Republic while shopping in Newport last month, and I love to wear it at every possible chance. I like pairing this sweater with the subtle stripes with gold jewelry and black skinny pants, which can look great at both work and out on a date. It's light enough for wearing all summer long, even with the long sleeves.

I’m ready to play today

Baseball is truly America’s pastime and I finally crossed a trip to Citifield off my NYC bucket list (last year I made it to Yankee Stadium at the very end of baseball season, so far doing better on my list of things to do in New York this summer).  The seats could not have been any better for a pale girl like me, right under the awning near right field, and very conveniently located near the bar and the ladies room.  One of my favorite parts had to be that one of the Mets' songs for when he got up to bat was "Call Me Maybe" - which is just really funny, and well very ironic for a grown man to get psyched up to. It was definitely a fun way to spend a day, and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Friday, I'm in love

All week long I’ve thought it was a day ahead of where it actually was – I must have just wanted to get to the weekend that badly.  Well in truth I have been looking forward to this weekend for a while, after a few tries to get out of town, one of my best friends is coming to visit me for the weekend. Lots of fun is planned and the weather is supposed to cooperate (hear that rain- I’ll see you on Tuesday!). I plan on spending lots of time in the city – going to the Highline, checking out Central Park, and of course the nightlife. I might need a vacation from my weekend when all is said and done. What’s on your agenda?

step by step - ooh baby

The unofficial start to summer is upon us- thank goodness. One of my favorite things to have for summer shoes is a great pair of nude flats – particular since my office is always freezing, so opened toed shoes mean cold feet all day long.  I love fun flats as you all probably know from many a post, but I really do think having a neutral shoe is ideal. The extra nice thing about these is your legs look a tiny bit longer since you aren’t breaking up the color of your leg with a shoe.

that's my job you see

I still sometimes think of myself as not a grown up, despite the fact I live on my own and have a job. I do like what I do, and feel that I enjoy my career, but sometimes I like to think about what I would do if I could do anything.  Currently on my list of dream jobs are: 1) Ninja – this is just plain cool, 2) Dog Trainer – such as seeing eye dogs, 3) Sommelier – hey I like wine why not make a career out of it. Do you ever dream about what you could be doing if anything was possible?

that for you

Ever have one of those songs that comes on your ipod while running that completely gets you psyched up for running? This is one of those songs that surprisingly got me ready to charge ahead the other day at the gym- ironically its about a break up, but hey whatever it takes to keep going I say. Plus I love Matt Wertz- I could listen to his songs all day long. Do you have any songs that make you want to run for hours?

you might say I'm a dreamer

Do you ever dream about celebrities? I sometimes will put famous people in my dreams, yet they are never typically doing very celebrity type things. I recently put Blake Shelton in a dream where I was at an airport, for some reason he was traveling with two five year old boys that were twins, that appeared to be his sons (he doesn't have kids but he did in my dream).  It was actually quite strange as he asked me to get him a coffee before we boarded the plane, which I was more then willing to do - nothing like getting a celebrity Dunkin Donuts as a pre-boarding snack. I attribute the dream to all the episodes of The Voice, I watched over the spring- I must have just thought Blake seemed like someone who would ask me to buy him coffee.

your mother should know

I just finished reading The Stepmother by Carrie Adams, and I really thought the story was very well written (I’ve lately found myself in books where I can’t quite figure out what the main plot is because the author has taken so many turns, I cannot understand how end up here again?). A bittersweet book about two women- one the mother, the other the soon to be stepmother and their interactions with three daughters and a man pivotal in both their lives. I loved that the booked flipped from being narrated by one each of the women – giving a truly unique perspective on what is a very difficult relationship (trust me this wasn’t Julia and Susan from the movie, Stepmom). I liked that despite themselves the women actually found that they liked each other and truly had the best interest of everyone at heart, even during the most difficult of situations. I highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a book about different loves and compassion that all people should have.

go swimming in the sea

Summer vacations are looming- and this girl definitely wants to get out of town a few times and get to the water. Ocean, lake or pool- I am not particularly picky as long as there's sunscreen, shade and cold drinks. I like spending every last second in the water or at least next to it, which often means a soggy swimsuit to pack up at the end of the vacation. This cute little bag could be just the answer to replacing plastic grocery bags for wet items at the end of a trip. I am thinking that one or two of these is in my future for this summer of fun.

the seat of my trousers

I hate buying pants - every where I go, every single pair fits different - so knowing my size is down near impossible. So when I finally find a pair I love, I buy multiples- because I know I will regret not having a backup when I wear out a particular pair. These cropped numbers from Banana Republic- which actually fall at my ankles so not really cropped for me are ideal style of pants. They're a bit form fitting but look great paired with t-shirts on the weekends, or with a sweater or cardigan at work.  So far, I already own two pairs- if another sale happens, I might make it to three.

Mama, you taught me to do the right thing

Yesterday was Mother’s Day, and as the child who lives in another state I was only able to celebrate with a few phone calls. My sister on the other hand got to have a nice day of Chinese food, shopping at Mom’s favorite place- JC Penney, and a trip to Dairy Queen. Regardless of not getting to spend the day with Mom, I still think she’s a very very hip lady and should be celebrated as often as possible.  Some cool things about my Mom that I think sets her apart: She’s sarcastic and funny, She’s an excellent listener, She works really hard (I definitely inherited her work-ethic), She’s incredibly kind- often going above and beyond for people on a regular basis, and She’s my mom!

would you lie with me and just forget the world?

This weekend looks like it’s going to be gorgeous around here – I am taking my show on the road to Astoria, in which I’ve never really spent much time in. New York is funny like that, particularly when you live in just outside it, sometimes venturing across the other river is like entering a foreign land – passports may or may not be required. I am really hoping to spend part of an afternoon in a park, just soaking up the sun after all that rain earlier this week.  It’s also Mother’s Day, so hopefully the card I mailed incredibly late to my fantastic mother arrives in time, or on Monday (it will be Monday or Tuesday...definitely by Wednesday- I am a terrible child). I’ll be sure to call her as she spends the day at the mall with my sister. What’s up for you this weekend? Any fun plans, visiting your mother, or someone’s mother?

let's watch the flowers grow

Garden and open space envy - I totally have that with spring fever right now. How amazing is this pink beetle as a planter? This makes me wish I had a patio or a porch to do cool things like this, however I am stuck with an inner courtyard shared with 20 other apartments. This city girl has a case of the suburban dreaming...

I wish I was little bit taller

One of my favorite tricks for solving short skirt issues is to order tall sizes. I am by no means tall, but I have found that I prefer longer options, nothing too far above the knee, particularly around work. Tall sizes tend to provide those extremely valuable itches that keep certain items appropriate for work, instead of just for playtime wear. This dress from The Gap, is a perfect example of one that in the normal sizing would have been inappropriate for my office, but at the tall length for me is perfect.

for a necklace sewn

I love really long necklaces to break up a solid dress or just separates of similar colors. I bought this one from JCrew a few weeks ago and I love wearing it to work. The different textures of the charms means it goes with every type of earring from pearls to diamonds, giving many options for other accessories.

we are innocent dog

It's pretty obvious- at least to me that I really want a dog. I grew up with a family dog- Princess, that was around before I was even born. I remember when we got our puppy, Daisy, when I was twelve to replace our faithful friend. Now my parents have Macy, who I think was a complete surprise to them when they ventured down the road to another furry companion. I even get to visit with Sharon's Boston Terrier Stella (not pictured- but equally as cute) when I stay with her people - I swear I am not just there to see the dog! I love the idea of a vintage suitcase as a dog bed though- what a clever little piece of decor but functional item for a little doggy to sleep in.

it's the freakin' weekend

Happy Weekend Dear Readers! I am much relived to be getting to the end of the work week – it seems that I am back to crazy days at work, similar to last fall and winter as I again transition to a new job focus. It’s definitely a good thing for me, but I am really hoping for no more surprise career moves for a good long while after this one.  Luckily, the weekend is one that I’ve been looking forward to all week. I have plans for Cinco de Mayo both nights, which seems a bit intense- but super fun all the same. One night is with colleagues – which hopefully means good behavior from most (though sometimes- the best stories come from those events), and the other with some friends. I think Sunday will be a leisurely recovery day, as I’ve already stocked up on breakfast foods to prepare a feast. What do you have planned this weekend?
